Jen's Hair Care Guide

5:29 AM

So, I decided to devulge some of my ultimate hair secrets. Now, I don't have rupenzal, envy worthy hair but this guide or just products I use, is a way to get damaged unruly hair to a heathy condition you can be happy about!

Look at how happy I am! (Yes, I did take my own photo! I don't have the perks of a personal photographer....YET!)

Serious.

Wavy.

Back in the beginning of June I finally ditched the extensions and chopped off my hair.
My hair RIGHT after it was chopped

It was liberating and the best decision I made. Since then I've sworn to take care of my hair (which was never a priority of mine.) My hair texture is much more on the finer side and being a blonde I get highlights which causes a lot of damage to my hair.

So, during the summer I made a lot of changes and added a lot of new products to my hair regime.

1) Air dry, air dry, air dry. I feel this is so, so, important. I know the struggle for most is if they air dry there hair it's not remotely manageable and just not acceptable appearance to have in public. However! As time went on and my hair continued to get healthy, so did the texture and the way it air dried. I actually prefer my hair air dried better than a blow dry. Blow drying your hair stripes your hair of all the moisture you put in when you shower so the best thing you can do  is let the moisture sink into it!
2) Use a wet brush! I'm telling you it's the best thing. It detangles your hair without breaking it. And the one I got was about $4 at Mejier, so you don't have to break the bank to get it!

3) Use a hair mask or deep conditioner. I swear by deep conditioner's and I use my favorite kind everytime I shower!
I've used many different kinds but stuck with this one the entire summer and it's really made a difference! I don't think anyone can over condition their hair. I use conditioning treatments several times a week! Especially during the winter months.

4) Use a heat protectant. Everyone (well most) are going to use some sort of heat on their hair. So why not do all you can to protect it?  I'm not sure of the actual results of using a heat protectant but it's more of a mental thing and it just makes me feel like I'm being kinder to it when I'm putting a 400 degree straighter on it.
I also use Treseme's heat protectant!

5)  Use a leave in conditioner. Like I said before I don't think you can ever have too conditioned of hair. When you're just going about your day to day life your hair loses moisture just from the environment and it's made a HUGE difference when I started using one day to day. I obviously have a love affair with Aussie products because I also use Aussie Leave in Conditioner. Hey! It works and smells good. Can't beat that.

6)  Don't shower everyday! Now for me it's sometimes difficult to go longer than two days without washing my hair. I workout and have thinner hair so it just gets oiler faster. But letting your natural oils come out is such a benefit and constantly washing your hair again strips your hair of moisture and benefits. So, I'd sometimes suggest skipping shampoo and just adding some conditioner to the ends of your hair.

7) Use dry shampoo. I have to use dry shampoo if I go more than a day without showering. You need to experiment with what products work best for your hair because some work better for others! I've tried a few different kinds and so far I again love using Aussie's dry shampoo.
It smells really great and actually makes my hair feel clean without feeling like a have a ton of build up.

8) Use a straightening serum. This helped the texture of my hair when I would air dry it so it didn't turn out wavy and frizzy! I absolutely swear by this.

9) DIY hair masks/oils. Now I do my research and I found that the best natural oil to use on hair is coconut oil. I got really excited about trying this because it's so multi-purposed. You can use it with cooking, lip balm, moisturizer and also as a hair mask!  So, I finally went out and got some a few weeks ago and tested it out!
From what I've read Virgin Coconut Oil is the way to go or even Extra Virgin. The difference is its processed differently and has more of the vitamins and natural oils that make it worth while. So, that does mean the more expensive the better it is. Just comes with the territory.
It sort of has the texture of Crisco. It melts in your hand when you rub it together. The best way to apply it is to your dry hair and apply to the driest areas of your hair such as the ends.
These pictures are terrifying so bare with me!
I applied it everywhere because my whole head of hair is dry.
Then I applied my deep conditioner I showed above and let it sit for about a half hour. I wrapped my hair in plastic wrap and put a hot towel over it.

10) Lastly, I take biotin every day. Some people are sort of against it saying "It doesn't benefit the hair in any way" but for me it did. One thing you should know is that almost everyone I've talked to who has used it and were prone to acne had more issues with breakouts when they took it. For me, I rarely breakout and I actually saw a positive effect on my skin in just the smoothness and overall appearance. The most common review is it helps nails grow. I personally didn't see a huge difference in the growth my nails. It mostly benefited my hair. I have new growth, my hair is fuller, and it looks healthier. I could be imagining it all but it seemed to grow a lot faster than it ever has. I think there is no harm in taking it so I'd rather take it if it is benefiting my hair.

Healthy hair actually takes a lot of work! Just like losing weight and getting fit! Hope this guide helps and I'll be back for more hair updates.
Here's to the hope I can grow my hair to my derrière. ;)
