Jen's X-Men: Apocalypse Movie Review
10:49 AMThis past Saturday I went to see the actually very mixed reviews on X-Men: apocalypse.
My initial thoughts prior to seeing their movie were that it most likely wouldn't be as good as the prior films but obviously I was going to see for myself.
Initial thoughts after seeing the movie: THAT WAS A GREAT F&@$ING SUPER HERO MOVIE!!
My after thoughts of my initial thoughts were: "WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ALL OF THESE MOVIE CRITICS? DID WE WATCH DIFFERNT MOVIES?" *then my feelings were followed by confusion*
What I liked:
• The storyline was easy to follow and made sense.
• I understood what each and every mutant's perspective/purpose was
• Their powers were badass/consistent
Also, contrarily to many of the complaints held for the overall purpose of the evil Apocalypse, it rang pretty clear to me. I don't understand the confusion here? He thought of himself as a God thus wanted to rule the world and remove the power away from the "weak." Seems pretty simple and makes sense since he came from a period where those in power where looked upon as Gods. (Egyptian period) So, I absoulty liked the performance of Apocloypse and I enjoyed him as the villain. It may have come across "cheesy" to some because we can't really wrap our brain around someone truly believing they are God and it's a pretty balsy thing to say. However, he could back up whatever he spoke. I sure as hell wouldn't mess with him. His power is undeniable.
What I loved:
•Quick Silver seemed to be generally the overall winner of the film. His light humor and the incredibly shot scenes made him the star of the show.
• The fighting scenes. I never sat there like, "Seriously, this is so pointless." Everything served a purpose. And it was brilliant to watch! They made me feel like a kid again, wishing I had some sort of super power.
•Magneto. For one Michael Fassbender was just brilliantly casted. He can do no wrong in my eyes. *SMALL SPOILER* In the forest after his wife and child were killed, he takes the necklace off of his daughter and shoots it through all of the officers necks who took part in the killing was simply again, bad ass.
•All of the new cast (minus one that I'll explain in a minute.) Such as Gene Grey, Cyclops and Storm. Great performances!
• The overall movie I just simple loved.
What I didn't care for:
For the first time it was actually hard for me to come up with things I didn't care for.
•Psylocke. Played by Olivia Munn. I'm not sure if was the performance or just how oversexulized she was but it rubbed me the wrong way. She was just sort of there for me flipping around and whipping her laser rope around. Meh.
•uhhhhhhh maybe the makeup could slightly have been changed up for apocalypse? I'm reaching here. It honestly didn't bother me too much.
I don't know what it was or if I'm a little biased because I've always been a major X-Men fan but I really enjoyed this movie. I wouldn't say it's better than X-Men: Days of future past because let's be honest that was setting the bar extremely high. However, I wouldn't say it was even a whole grade below the last film it was a great third installment. For the life of me I won't understand all of the critics hate or dislike for it but that's okay. To me this film brought back (for me) what I feel super hero movies have been missing (honestly I'm only comparing to Captain America: Civil War) and that's a clear motive of what they stand for, consistent powers that actually remain the same or grow throughout the movie and that feeling of "I wanna be a fricken Super Hero!" Civil War lacked that for me. But I'll save that review for another time.
Overall Grade: B+
With my high praise throughout the article most would think I would give a sold A (I'm assuming) but I don't want to devalue my scale because I reserve A grade films for films that absolutely move me.
Thanks for tuning in to "Jen's Movie Reviews" until next time! Xo
